The Bishops of the United States have set the guideline of abstaining from all meat on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays of Lent for those 15 years of age and older.
Catholics between 18 and 59 are also asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means not eating anything in-between meals and eating smaller meals of a modest size.
The ages of fasting and abstinence are meant to take the maturity and health of individuals into account. Individuals are asked to follow the rule according to their health and ability. The goal of fasting and abstinence is an aid to spiritual growth and not of simply following regulations.
